Rent Assistance Benefit (RAB)

ELIGIBLE TENANTS ARE GIVEN A DIRECT RENT SUBSIDY TO ASSIST WITH RENTAL COSTS

This program offers a subsidy directly to the eligible tenant to assist with rental costs and is delivered through the Greater North Foundation on a monthly basis. Eligible applicants are given priority based on need. Need is determined by a number of factors including but not limited to income, assets, number of dependents and current housing condition.

Tenants must provide proof that they are renting a legal unit as well as provide all documentation as requested in the application. Tenants will be required to submit monthly rent receipts from the landlord in order to receive their monthly rent subsidy. This subsidy is based on the difference between 30% of the household's income and the market rent as approved by the Greater North Foundation Board. Subsidies will be provided based on this calculation to a maximum of $475/month.

Need is determined by a number of factors including but not limited to income, assets, number of dependents and current housing condition.

Tenants must make their full rent payment directly to the landlord.

Eligibility Requirements

Must be a Canadian Citizen, have landed immigrant status or have residency equal to that required for Canadian Citizenship

Must reside within the approved geographical boundaries of the Greater North Foundation

Must be in core housing need (currently live in an unsuitable, inadequate or unaffordable dwelling and cannot afford alternative housing in their community)

Must possess assets (property, cash and liquid assets) valued at $25,000 or less. Excluded from this limit are essential items such as clothing, furnishings, and a primary vehicle

Must reside in an eligible rental housing unit
